Epiphone 03:06
Look at me in my new clothes I move too fast for the kids’ to play Short of breath, shorter of money The rally sport is miles away Sing with the boys out back later We’re gonna play some mailbox baseball He’s a hit with my girlfriend I met her in study hall Get to my house after darkness No new jobs in my old town Draw some pictures in the kitchen Talk to mom in her evening gown I play an Epiphone I’ll be driving next year I’m in love for now I guess So let’s get Wendell to buy us beer The princess of my high school Sings of oh, sweet misery I’ll play dead in Social Studies and dream of her in History The one view I could find my love Hope is sitting in a fish tank Held up by string suspended there Who can care what’s to thank College life cannot be for me Kids too smart for their small eyes I’ll drive ‘round in circles today Swat all hope and kill them flies Repeat chorus Truth is light is my guide And all the boys they say I’m grand And if I follow every footstep I’ll probably see a lot of land Jobs are good every now and then Buy some car mats and buy some beer Teach me how to earn a living With nothing ventured and nothing feared Relentless are my foes and worries nestled in my Converse shoes Of course I’m too old to be chicken Of course I’m too young for the blues (Dave Butler)

K.I.S.S. 03:31
When I’m walking on razors all the way to the front yard Ask me what happens if she should lean out the window When I’m walking on the Amazon River all the way to the front yard Ask me what happens if she should get within a stone’s throw I start to feel sentimental I feel sentimental I start to feel sentimental all over I start to feel sentimental all over again Then when I fry down the door all the way stand at the foot of the stairs like a statue Ask me what starts to start happening When she walks in the room looking just like you I start to feel sentimental I feel sentimental I start to feel sentimental all over I start to feel sentimental all over again. K - I - crooked letter - crooked letter K - I - crooked letter - crooked letter K - I - crooked letter - crooked letter K - I - crooked letter - crooked letter Repeat chorus (Darick Chamberlin)

Rejoice 02:57
‘Cause they’ll break every bone in your body and they’ll dress you the same press your path with the tracks of a wolf, my friend across the open plain Rejoice Rejoice Rejoice Rejoice If there’s a war inside every one of us why’s there one outside? The center of the Earth rests in all of us in all of us inside Repeat chorus Heaven above, Heaven below Stars above, stars below All that is above also is below As above So below (Mike Washer)
4.
North Of Me 03:27
Too much North inside of me made it hard for me to see, yeah yeah Misery organized my song Love no longer spurred me on, oh no My heart is glad now because of you now Oh, yeah yeah. My heart is glad now, I’ll go with you now Oh, yeah yeah. You stand up beside of me We stand there for all to see, yeah yeah They all wonder how we’ll fare We throw our hands into the air, yeah yeah Repeat chorus Ran away from all I had Every one-two-three just turned out bad, yeah yeah Now you love me and I love you Apparently one plus one still equals two, yeah yeah Repeat chorus (Shawn Wolfe)

Break up all the NFL teams There’s a promised land You can be a tight end for me We’ll do the best we can Go deep go wide get ready First down in the Serengeti I wonder why I run so steady It’s because of you Wisenheimer, mountain climber Eye burn crackhouse lover man Cynical disco public servant No more master plan Go deep go wide get ready Second down in the Serengeti I wonder why I run so steady It’s because of you When it comes tomorrow There won’t be sorrow You can beg and you can borrow But be the best you can Go deep go wide get ready Third down in the Serengeti I wonder why I run so steady It’s because of you Go deep go wide get ready It’s fourth and goal in the Serengeti I wonder why I run so steady It’s because of you. Go deep go wide get ready It’s sudden death in the Serengeti I wonder why I run so steady It’s because of you (Mike Washer, Shawn Wolfe, Darick Chamberlin)

Bossy 03:20
Out of Africa and into pouring rain we left the theater and started arguing That’s never how it is Where did you park the car? No, no, you missed the point Ah, let’s go hit a bar At 22 you thought you knew it all Your sassy Nancy boots your yellow hair like straw At 27 a withered desert flower The milk of human love how quick it starts to sour. What happened to that girl? That bossy bossy girl Can you tell me now? With those big brown eyes telling sunglass lies Can you tell me? Can you tell me? We started out okay back in our high school days We’d go to football games We’d call each other names you were an angel, you were a feminist I was a genius a fucking idiot Driving all around that little two horse town with the car top down the Sadie Hawkins dance the khaki army pants far behind us, all behind us Repeat chorus If I was famous, a playboy millionaire I’d buy the pyramids and we could both live there I’d do the yard work I’d drive the kids to school I’d be so happy and you’d be happy too And we’d be living in the lap of luxury not like we’re living now And you would take my hand and we would start to stand The lights would come up we’d start to stand up Na na na na na na, Na na na na na na... (Darick Chamberlin)

I know a cat named Richard But I call him Rick I know a cat named Kenny but I call him Ken Tree stump babies tell no lies Speaker’s Corner sings and cries New York doesn’t have time for Spring Neighborhood kids do their rapping thing, which is fine with me On Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday I worry about the problems of the world On Tuesday and Thursday and Friday I worry about my own On Sunday I realize it’s all the same (Shawn Wolfe)

Cruelty 04:50
I got my fist to the wall, my ears to the ground From where I stand honey you’re the best one around Ladies, plumes, and pigeons usually fly to the South When my best foot forward is in my mouth I stumble on my tongue all swelled like a boat Better off to burn all the scripts I wrote They call for props, parts, page by page Backdrops, curtain calls, and you center stage Why doesn’t the world look more like you? Why doesn’t the world look more like you? Why doesn’t the world look more like you? Why doesn’t the world look more like you? Drive throughs, matinees, low-budget scenery I got a front row seat among the gentry Newscasts, cinema, all the violence I see Your hand to your cheek its own brand of cruelty Repeat chorus It would be so absurd to give you any flowers With all this dirt right under my nails You know what you to me is your own brand of cruelty You know it isn’t fair what you do to me Repeat chorus I should ask you to your face Why the face of the world isn’t More like your face Repeat chorus (Mike Washer)
9.
Pretty Cold 02:29
Did you go outside today? Hey I’m a little worried There’s a nip in the air today and we know it’s pretty cold You make it pretty cold outside Summer leaves us in a hurry You leave me as I fold There’s no snow in my flurry It’s pretty cold in my house It’s pretty cold in my home It’s pretty cold in the upstairs room It’s pretty cold in my bedroom How did I act for all this mess? How can I mend your mind? The trip’s off ‘till we settle all this and there’s no shovel I can find I’m in need of your ear muffs to uncover my new noise Oh, how big my head looks while I’m throwing snow balls with the boys Repeat chorus (Dave Butler)
10.
Favorite Eye 04:22
Before you criticize my love You first should understand my stance that love has built me up from nothing Love is the force that floats above me Love is my defense, love is my defense Before you speak your point of view Speak first so slow into my favorite eye here I am listening so close to you Why don’t you wonder why? Why don’t you wonder why? Why don’t you wonder why? Before the sun burns red and falls down dead Before the carriage of your pain diverts you I’m gonna try to reawaken I’m gonna try to re-alert you to my love Before you come to your conclusion When I know that you’ll both get up to leave Remember the reasons, the good and bad, the happy the sad They will stay with me When you walk away Why do you walk away? Repeat chorus (Darick Chamberlin)
11.
Talking when summertime and fields are full of darkness and in his voice another wire like some electrical sadness I asked him, I asked him what it was like to be such a classic A classic situation of a good thing gone, he said You know it’s not the word I think of when I taste the sweetness Blackberry Blackberry Blackberry black is black, very black, very black, very black When I think about it, think about it, think about it running through my memory You know I said some cruel things baby in the silence to give something to you where it might still be where it might still be Repeat chorus I ask would the world be such a war zone such a waste if we talked about it once in awhile You seem distracted as you say, “Isn’t this the best ice cream you ever tasted?” Then you check your watch Then you smile Repeat chorus (Darick Chamberlin)
12.
The Way of the Tantra comes tomorrow Seven stage erotic rocket time Man Number Three is your new pilot blasting through the roof of tired lovers Help me now if I believe in Heaven But does it mean that I should live in Hell? Should I call The Three Investigators before I’m caught up in idle speculation? Franklin Albert Jones is still alive He’s layin’ low in the Fiji Islands Franklin Albert Jones is Love-Ananda He went by Bubba Free John, but only for awhile Bubba wears his hair on his shoulders He told me once that I should surrender The Way of Divine Communion Tango is not a dance that I have ever heard of I get tired of staring at the ceiling Simulated starry, starry nights I think that I might die of modern living The window isn’t big enough to fit into the sky Repeat chorus I remember Big Rock Candy Mountain Cherokee Village gift shops in a row Careless easy riders miss the landscape They estimate the distance to the next concrete savanna Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test Ohio Flying colors landing in the snow Does the ocean taste the same in California as it tastes when you live in Morocco? Repeat chorus (Shawn Wolfe)
13.
Boys, when the hand that pulls the string has lost sight of the kite and then the far off sound comes near the sick music of a fight Take comfort in me saying like a bullet from a gun the sum of what there is, my friend is a number more than one Have fun. Thank you, New Jersey Thank you so well Thank you, New Jersey It’s more than I can tell Girls, when you just don’t know now just which way to go now it wouldn’t hurt to think it out now and mix that with your know-how Like a doorway in a play about the French Resistance make it hinge on effort Make it hinge on your good persistence, and say, Repeat chorus Mister, when the iron birds make another pass and the monkey boys are running wild and we’re running out of gas I take comfort in the notion when I take a time or two it’d cost me a pretty penny but for the likes of you Repeat chorus (Darick Chamberlin)
14.
The Badge 03:01
The badge hurts The badge stings It decorates the jacket with the red it brings like wings, like wings on you Bright comet above the pocket covered up with writing like a love locket that shines, shine on shine true We all survive the giving in to walk alive in everything It all remains, remains, remains A distance never twice the same You say, “Whoa” You step back Think of qualities that this here lacks then start again begin again brand new To pin it down splash the age Japanese on the white of a page Love rage, love rage, love rage The two survive the giving in to walk alive takes everything It all remains, remains, remains The badge, a symbol of the change The two survive the giving in to walk alive takes everything It all remains, remains, remains The badge, the badge, the badge… (Darick Chamberlin)
15.
Seth Sez 01:40
Joe Fear, Joe Desire Walking around with the same old stories Another goes down for the count Up the river to pay his dues Pressing out badges by the minute for three consecutive lifetime terms Pressing out badges like: Life to Live Live with Risk Risk Your Love Love Your God God Above God Below God Be Here God Be Now Now’s the Time Time for Living… Your fear, your desire At your service, at their mercy Cause and effect are one and the same Afraid of the very things you say you want to swim in a chlorinated pool that’s full of twenty foot diamond-headed snakes Repeat chorus (Shawn Wolfe)
16.
Oh, my sweet doorway to success Open wide and show your breast College has been mean to me I’m so blind oh, help me see Pick up after my morning rage Fill my lion-headed cage Breathe new life into tired lungs ‘till the season kills me, thrills me Dawn breaks the morning dishes Paycheck won’t fulfill my wishes River robs me of my soul But I can’t stop until I’m full Throw some stones at the dog house Creep in late like a church mouse Help myself to the neighbor’s car But this world’s carried off too far Dream me awake, oh, sweet sickness Wake me to the sound of birds Clean my head of all its thickness Words are good but they’re just words She’s the goddess of the world But watch close as her flag’s unfurled Could we be the best of lovers? Oh, yes, ma’am, I’ll wash your covers Men who hate the light of day They stay out late to show and play They rest their heads to all that grows What they’re learning no man knows Repeat chorus (Dave Butler)
17.
You were pale by the Exxon sign We crossed our toes while the band kept time A dark grey suit rifles through your trash (and there’s) frozen wine in my crystal glass You let me down You let me down You let me down You let me down. You let me dance around ‘till I broke a sweat The cards and tokens I won’t forget The angry night falls down on me I picked the fruit, oh baby, it was green Repeat chorus You let me put my fire in a gunny sack I never knew that this wall talked back A railroad car rattles through this scene We picked the fruit, oh baby, it was green Repeat chorus (Mike Washer)
18.
Fish Love 02:20
You know there was a moment when I saw you Then there was a second time too I asked you out and you said no thanks The second time I finally got through The cow in my room reminds me of you The photos that I have do too The first time that I ever saw your face The first time we let our hands embrace I knew nothing could stop our new feeling of love that we went through The blocks in my room remind me of you The photos that I have, they do too Then there was a moment that I saw you Then there was a second time too I asked you out and you said no thank you The second time I finally got through The maps in my room remind me of you The photos that I have do too The first time I ever saw your face The first time we let our hands embrace I knew nothing could ever stop our new feeling of love that we went through The fish in my room remind me of you The photos that I have do too (Dave Butler)

Greeks deducing Earth with twigs and lengths of shade come forward arguing Greek Positive that knowledge is something cool faceless with discovery mental and mythical and then they disappear A Honda truck goes by The sun, the bus, the passengers Companion cold and quiet continuing on unaware The driver keeps his eyes on his road too Magellan’s ghost sits next to us immune Immune to street signs or a crisis of the soul The artificial freon air so fake, so perfect and so cold Outside everything goes by Outside tankers kick up dust Inside voices fight for quiet Inside there is something waiting in all of us A Pontiac goes by Me and you and the passengers Positive of nothing in particular Thinking of nothing in particular Laughing at nothing in particular Nothing in particular (Darick Chamberlin)

Tell me where, in what country, who was first cousin, first cousin to the one? Echo speaks when there’s a sound on a pond or a river… Where is learned Heloise? For his love he took this pain Likewise, where is the Queen commanded be thrown in the Seine? The Queen, white as a lily, who sang, sang with the siren’s voice? And Jeanne, the good maid of Lorraine whom the English burnt so long ago… Where are they??? The Ballad of the Dead Girls (Darick Chamberlin)

Little Crier 02:42
Hey ain’t that your crack that big picture on the wall I know I’ve seen you somewhere else at the schoolyard in the Fall But I can’t feel good enough I can’t cry at all today I can’t ruin anybody but I can hide like a little boy You’re the prize-winning head the one skull that we all admire There’s one thing that keeps me hating you and that one thing inspires the crier Repeat chorus Stuff my thinking down my pants stand on the top of a big grey slab shoot big wads at the people see how many silly heads we grab Repeat chorus Rush those little ones off to bed Fill their heads with great big toys K-Mart’s closed ‘till tomorrow now and the city’s not making too much noise Repeat chorus (Dave Butler)
22.
We used to tango on the phone Now it’s just a dial tone Ear to ear I always had you here, baby in my home sweet home A lock of your hair in my comb That lousy card you sent from Rome Another man’s a king I scream a peasant scream in my home sweet home Your Irish eyes shone We chased a rainbow You kissed my jawbone Can we mambo on the moon where there’s plenty of room? How I loved your flesh and your bones in that home we called our own What’s done is done You’ve left me all alone, baby in my home sweet home (You’re the only one I want…) Another man’s a king I scream a peasant scream in my home sweet home (Mike Washer)
23.
I’d like to work out a silly love song with you I’m in the house with my really big hat on I’m a senseless type that always rings true But we could write the words ‘till the words are gone Who’s the lucky fellow with the pants of stone? We can pick his brains for a good time had Your girlfriend has a head that’s all alone I’m not saying that’s good but that’s her dad We’re rocking so hard we can’t stand up The back porch is breaking down to the noise Give me Kool-Aid in a Dixie cup and a G.I. Joe to play with the boys So the songs don’t come out like they should It wouldn’t hurt to hire a good guy Be a rich man if I had wood There’s about a million things to buy Buy the world a new set of wheels Get back rolling down Cemetery Road Hit them bullies, see how it feels I’ve got a big mind and it’s gonna explode Repeat chorus (Dave Butler)
24.
I’d like to go out later but my pants are in the dryer I’d like to see you later but I didn’t shine my shoes I’d like to hold you close now but I need a shave and I lost my belt I’d like to kiss you sometime but my socks don’t seem to match Can we go out to the country wade out in the lake? Lose our minds in sunshine Have fun for goodness sake Throw off all our sorrow Swim naked in the weeds We’ll swing high from the highest tree and sow our wild seeds I’d love to swoon you somehow but my hat is gone and my watch is broke I’d love to dance you sometime when my shorts don’t want to ride I’ll always dream you are near me but I can’t see my shirt I’ll never let you see me until I find some clothes (Dave Butler)

about

(from the liner notes): There was a physicality about indie pop in the late-80s in the USA that will never be matched again, that could scarcely be imagined these days. The low-fi tape hiss, the requited fanzine kiss, the handwritten hit and miss. Joe Kafka, four design school grads from Columbus, Ohio, took that to another level, exchanging songs on a Fostex X-15 Multitracker cassette recorder that circulated like a dog-eared library book. Songs about decade-old memories from Cincinnati and Mount Vernon (“one of Ohio’s Best Home Towns”), filtered through the blur of college. They formed a community, population four, that became a community, population Beatkit Tapes, population Columbus, population K Records mailing list, population me, and now you. Not measured by numbers but by unpremeditated brilliance, by glorious imperfection, by lost and found love.
